What is Aquaponics?
Technical Description: Aquaponics is the blending of aquaculture (fish-keeping) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil). In an aquaponic system the fish, plants, and various bacteria form a symbiotic group: the fish eat food and excrete waste. The fish waste is consumed by the bacteria which break it down in to nitrates, which are absorbed by the plants.

Sq . ft . gardening may be the approach to planning for a small planted garden. This practice follows other organic gardening ideas and this technique is perfect for areas with really poor soil or novice gardeners or people with disabilities. The initial method on this practice normally contains an open box with finite amount of soil, divided into grids.

Why I Choose Aquaponics? - Maximize the yield with minimum effort
Dec 13th, 2010

As a starting point of self-sufficiency, growing vegetables and fruits in the backyard would be one of the easiest options. In my case, garden production was the first project, then raising hens for eggs was next. Composting and recycling water came somewhere between. All projects are enjoyable and rewarding. As I get used to this lifestyle change, these projects get easier to maintain.
Now, I’m thinking about the next, probably the hardest project to...

OK Guys and Gals, That's it for the year. I'm so delighted with how many people who are regular visitors to my Blog and I hope that I can satisfy your needs with it throughout the next twelve months. It has been an absolute pleasure being able to provide something that has been able to cultivate such a speedy and strong following. I do wish every one of you a wonderful and safe holiday period and look forward to serving you again in the new year.

I will be back on the first Monday in the new year. That is as close as I can get according to your/my location. Basically I try to publish the Blog around midnight Monday evening Australian Eastern Standard Time. So if you get it a bit late at least now you understand why.

Anyhow All the Best and see you real soon

From E-Zine Articles:
You can design an aquaponics at home system that can produce fresh organic vegetables and raise fish at the same time. Taking a lesson from fish farming otherwise known as aquaculture and the practice of raising plants without soil known as hydroponics a marriage of the two worlds are created to form aquaponics.
Aquaponics at home can be a very basic system designed to grow a small herb garden or an aggressive system designed to raise organic vegetables to feed an entire household.

Well, getting ready for some new catfish so we moved the aquarium outdoors to become the new Quarantine Aquaponics system.
We decided the big aquarium indoors was too much moisture for the house and we needed more storage space in the spare room. Well why not set it up outside? I did add a cover in front to keep the sun off the tank as the algae would otherwise have taken over and heated up the tank quickly.

What are the components of a basic aquaponics system?
  1. A fish tank with fish, the size you select will be determined by where you locate it and the scope of your system.
  2. A grow bed with plants, there is no limit here in terms of what you can grow, it will depend on your goals, the type of water flow and the space you have dedicated to the aquaponics system.
  3. A water pump and filtration system, it is vital that a perfect....

Thanks for all these great aquaponic links and ideas.  Thank you, Jag, for the film clip.  The man, Hobie, whom the speaker is most directly conversing is a long time friend of mine.  The plant he is featuring, taro, is an important one of our staples.
My favorite part of focusing my efforts and concerns on food production, is that it makes me happy.  Cultivating life around us, is so much more joyful and fulfilling than stressing about the rise of fascism and an impending economic collapse.  ... I do both, rejoice in the abundant biology around me and stress about the digression in our society.  I like the happy part best, so I place the most energy there.
Our aquaculture system should be up and running within the month.  Hopefully, the rainwater feed will minimize the need for the pump system that will be in place.  We'll let you know how well we succeed.....

Now From GOArticles:With the tough economic circumstances we're all facing, getting inexpensive and quality foods and products is a growing challenge for even the most experienced shoppers. Prices are through the roof to the point where it seems you have to spend a fortune to have a healthy diet. More inexpensive products are always of lower quality, this holds true for food as well. You can now get the best organic fruits, vegetables, and fish… plus save money at the same time! Where does this come from? It comes from your own farm…

The Clock, She is a Ticking....

And in many quarters the debate is warming up. Is Christmas on the ropes and struggling to stay on it's feet. I guess another way of putting it could be, has commercialism squeezed the life out of the concept. I think we might be reaching a period in history where we really could see Christmas slide toward a black hole unless the meaning is reinstated to where it was 30 to 40 years ago.

We've only a few days to go and I have never felt so 'un-Christmassy'. Maybe it's just me, maybe it's old father time letting me know I'm not a kid any more.

Enter aquaponics, a system of food gardening that has a small but growing following, not least because its advantages seem almost too good for being true. I've been flicking through the Archives this morning and I am pretty sure that this Blog has covered Aquaponics from every direction possible. However not to the depth that we can go. The things I'll be looking at throughout 2011 will be to try to cover the more technical aspects of the biological processes and of course searching for breakthroughs or better understandings of what is happening or can happen within certain systems.

In other words 'The Search Goes On' Into 2011 and beyond. So stick with us as we attempt to continue to uncover What's New and What's Different through the upcoming twelve months and of course we will continue to cover the very basics of DIY for what I believe will be a huge rush of newcomers into this wonderful hobby.

Aquaponics is a farming method inspired by ancient farming systems from the Aztecs to Egypt, based on the recycling of nutrients in nature. Aquaponics Need Help

2. How do I power my pump without electricity? I'm thinking solar or wind.

3. Due to evaporation and plants using the water how do I replace it? I was thinking a few rain barrels, but if it doesn't rain for a while......? Guess where I suggested he comes...

An aquaponics garden is a growing system that may sound like an odd amalgam of natural ingredients, but they all add up to an efficient and tasty cropper’s dream. Take it from James Tinker, who has been gardening off and on for 30 years.
