Grow Fish and Vegetables at Home with Aquaponics

Have you ever wished that you could produce more of your own food from home, but were discouraged because you thought the amount of time and money it would take was too much? Or maybe you thought you didn't have enough space.

All of things will no longer be an excuse once you learn about what aquaponics can do for you. Aquaponics can bring you a steady supply of fresh fish and vegetables with a minimum amount of work and space. And for less money than what you might pay for lesser quality food at the store.

An overview of aquaponics

Aquaponics has been around for many of years, however, many people are new to the concept. It is simply using fish waste from the fish in your tank to feed the plants you wish to grow. The nitrogen cycle takes care of the magic by filtering the dirty water in the grow bed before it

Maybe this is a long shot, but has anyone on here experimented with aquaponics?

I enjoy cooking as much as I enjoy my planted tank and was thinking the other night that its gotta be possible to grow some herbs and lettuces using aquarium water as the main nutrient source. How awesome to have the herbs grown so close to home!

In my preliminary research I came across:

Five Reasons to Start Aquaponic Farming
Whether you want to start growing commercially, grow your own food, or start a new hobby, aquaponics farming is something to take a serious look at. Decoration Your Home With Aquaponics
You can choose fish that will enhance the beauty of your room. There are all kinds of colorful fish you can choose from. Or you can choose fish like tilapia or other fish that are good to eat. This way your aquaponics system will not only produce vegetables, but also fresh fish to eat.
Either way, aquaponics systems are very simple to put together and maintain. Whatever types of food and fish you decide to grow is up to you. There are Aquaponic systems that will fit just about any lifestyle and tastes.

Aquaponics: A sustainable food source for the future
What is the general outlook for this type of fish growing and vegetable gardening as opposed to the traditional method of fishing the oceans and growing vegetables in soil? Those dealing commercially with aquaponics believe it will have an important place in the commercialization of food products in the future.

Aquaponics - Nutrients
Nutrients in an aquaponic system are delivered to plant life in a liquid form, aquacultural effluent. Aquaponics is a completely natural process that duplicates what occurs naturally in our lakes, rivers, ponds and streams, along with any other waterway. This is a method of gardening that is organic, along with being a way of gardening in harmony with nature.

In aquaponic gardening, effluent from fish tanks that is full of nutrients is used to fertigate

LEE'S SUMMIT, Missouri - The cold and snow keeps the crops from growing in early January and has kept Dave Howe from enjoying an inexpensive organic salad from his garden, until now.

OK I think that will do...Enjoy

Oh dear, Where did Friday go....

Apologies my friends, we've had a mishap.  Our Bobcat got bogged in the mud. Since the flood we've had a few nights of rain and the ground we normally can work/drive on had taken all the wet it could handle. So my mate drove into a scrubby area to remove an old motor and when he went to turn the bobcat she dug into the ground and the mud just swallowed half of each of the four wheels.

Well we tried for three hours to get it out with a 2 ton car jack and lots of timber, then we had the guy at the back of our place with his tractor to give us a hand. They have trotters and their own training track. But the tractor was only two wheel drive with a small motor and it didn't even budge the bobcat. eventually we got the thing out and finished the work but by then Friday was a gone chicken. \

So here I go with the new WEEKEND Issue... Please Enjoy:

AND SO THE POWER THAT IS AQUAPONICS JUST KEEPS GROWING

Remember on Monday I wrote about both children and the More Mature members of our societies. Well I left out the middles. and the earlies. Say from 25 through to 50 years young. So what do I have to say about them. Plenty Brother..

For a start most people in this group are busy. They are busy from where I sit because to me, they look busy . They have lots to do, places to be, NOW. Yeah NOW is the priority in their lives because they are full of busy.

So how does a busy person have time to slow down to garden. Well! It's easy. Aquaponics....

Once an aquaponics setup has cycled and settled in, you don't have to spend hardly any time with it. Apart from selecting what we want for dinner, the only time I spend on our personal A/P unit is about 10 minutes per day and all I do is act like some commander surveying his troops. I walk around checking water levels to see if a bit of extra water is needed then I give the fish a bit of a feed, have a stroll through the grow beds checking that all is OK give the tomato plants a flick if it's a Monday, (Yes Monday for me is flick day for the Tommys. That's to spread the pollen in the air so fertilisation takes place. Just like you flick your sons' ear if he needs it) Then I'll have a look through the plants for any bugs that may have found a way through the greenhouse shadecloth. There it is. A bit over an hour per week.

The only variation to that is a few seconds to adjust water flows if needed and once a week really study the fish, looking for signs of illness or stress and dealing with it as needed.

So that leaves plenty of time to go do "Busy" Plus you've provided a significant proportion of yours or your families food needs and the rest of the street as well if you are inclined that way.

Meanwhile we need to look for some new information......

What is Aquaponics? (Video)

by Chef Felisha on January 11, 2011
Aquaponics is a way of growing food that has a symbiotic relationship between the water, fish and vegetation. It is a wonderful alternative to other types of farming and when done well can add to the quality of our communities.

ITPWC is a phytoremediation device based on the Eco-Machine systems developed by Dr. John Todd* and research done by the ITPWC team on aquaponics systems. Finally from E-Zine articles:

Aquaponics media needs to be chemically inert, porous, stable and easily replenished. There are several aquaponic medias, like coconut husk, expanded clay, expanded slate, gravel, peat moss, perlite, rockwool, sand, and vermiculite. Each providing there own unique characteristics and benefits in different proportions.

The Perfect Gardening System for any age

Gardening has always been spoken of as a sort of labour of love. Well that is sort of it. For some. For others, it can be variations of Love or variations of labour - Or just a various mix of both. But one thing stands out.
Aquaponics is the vehicle that can provide the easy ride for people who find gardening to be a chore or physically too demanding for whatever reason. Take children, a garden is not always an inviting adventure. The processes that we see as a means to a goal doesn't always add up to be worth the effort or the wait for kids.

Aquaponics is visual gardening with interesting management thrown in. Children can more easily chart in their minds the process as they watch and begin to understand how each step in the A/P program unfolds. Seeds, Seedlings, choices of raft or gravel or expanded clay balls, little pots with plants growing inside while roots are being observed outside the containers while water rushes through, feeding the plants as the roots of the plants help to clear and purify the water. That same water gurgles down a shoot or slipway sometimes visibly, as it heads off to a sump tank where sludge is allowed to settle then that water is off again on it's journey to a tank or pond where there are real live fish swimming, cavorting, surfacing with mouths open almost saying feed me, feed me....

Or the guy of my age. Carrying injuries from a life long past of work and play. Feet, ankles legs that are swollen or aching. and the back, Oh the back. Age catching up. Age acting up. Aquaponics for me and many others is not a chore it's a recreation, a hobby that is the embodiment of gardening with none of the difficulties. No bending, Raking, Shoveling, digging, squatting and trying to somehow get up with some semblance of grace or dignity without falling face first or toppling sideways totally out of control. Being able to do all those things that were taken for granted 10, 20, 30 years ago, and now to do those things better and grow vegetables faster, better and easier. Oh yes, and tastier so much more tastier.

I LOVE Aquaponics with a passion. and that's why I sit here spreading the word bring everything I can find that can help, encourage and motivate you, your Dad or Mom or your children to participate, to enjoy and hopefully love A/P as I do....Now back to play....

For everyone else, you either remember or you still have a while to go...

School aquaponics, not finished yet either!

2 pics of the aquaponics system. All in place, but plumbing not finished yet. There's 3 1250L fish tanks, with viewing windows, and 6 540L plant grow beds. 2 of these will be filled with 19mm drainage gravel, 2 with the fancy (and expensive) expanded clay balls and 2 will be floating raft style.

Path to isle food security is to create local demand

Editor's note: This piece was signed by the 15 agricultural industry groups listed at the end.
Hawaii's reliance upon imports is not the fault of individuals or institutions but the result of economic forces. In seeking to find alternatives to this reliance, we must bear in mind that agriculture is a diverse industry, which is a strength.

Field Report and Recipes, January 8, 2011

Waking up to a snow covered city this morning, I happily thought of the escape from winter I made on Monday afternoon.  I took a little sustainable ag field trip to White Horse, PA, to see the greenhouse where our Boston bibb lettuce grows.  Sunset View Aquaponics is located about 15 minutes east of...

What is A/P: Land-based agriculture can be hard on the environment. Crops often use nitrogen-based fertilizers. The fertilizers seep into ground water and run into rivers and streams, where they foster the growth of aquatic plant life and algae. Excessive algae growth strips...

From historic bush block to horticultural haven

IF you are like me, you might occasionally think how much easier it would be to grow lots of food if you had a few acres in the bush.

While this may be true, what you gain on the roundabout you can lose on the swings.

Alan and Jan McKibbin bought 6.5 hectares (16 acres) at Ellalong nine years ago, thoroughly fed up with the maddening crowd, and especially the traffic, on the Central Coast.

my chooks have turned into ducks --
poor sods i'm not allowed outside - being a pom - i'm allergic to water!!!!
all that lovely fresh water just running out to sea -- we need HUGE dams up north -- then pump it all south following the rail line - sydney - melbourne - adelaide
water control is the key -- another snowy mountains scheme!!

The Weekend is near and I Need the Rest...

This has been a huge week that everyone here in South East Queensland will be glad to put to bed as soon as we can. There is so much heartache and in some areas the smell is sickening. But I need to not dwell on this and deal with what is at hand.

This is unbelievable news about aquaponics. Here is the system for anyone: poor and rich alike.
Saves you your quality of life, your time, your resources, and many more.
Enter aquaponics, the whole of food gardening which has a small but growing group of followers, not least because its advantages seem almost too good for being true. An aquaponics installation requires no soil, scant water (two-ten percent of what’s employed in usual vegetable garden), a modest financial outlay and minimal maintenance. There’s no coping with pesticides, and also the system is sustainable and straightforward to set up. For gardeners alert to.....

How Aquaponics Changes the Game
- Waist-high aquaponic gardening eliminates weeds, back strain and animal access to your garden.
- Reuse resources currently considered “waste”. There is no more toxic run-off from either hydroponics or aquaculture.
- Uses only 1/10th of the water of soil-based gardening, and even less water than recirculating aquaculture.
- Watering is integral to the system. You can’t under-water or over-water.
- Fertilizing is also integral to the system. You can’t over-fertilize or under-fertilize.
- Gardening chores are cut down dramatically or eliminated. The aquaponic grower only does

Aquaponics system is the most sustainable food production system in our world today. Aquaponics in a dynamic, natural, pond-type eco-system, produces both fish and organic vegetables; thus producing 2 streams of income. Aquaponics systems provide controlled environment where aquaculture (fish breeding/growing) and hydroponics (soil less plant growing) is integrated together in a symbiotic habitat. It is composed of a water re-circulating environment where the fish and plants live symbiotically. Both light and temperature are carefully controlled in an aquaponic system....

Send in the clones: Popular scion exchange could produce hundreds of fruit trees

By nadia drake

APTOS -- Some of the tastiest fruits can't be bought. Not because they're too expensive, but because they don't exist in stores. However, they can be grown -- cloned, actually -- by the average backyard gardener.
On Jan. 16, the Monterey Bay chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers will host a scion exchange, where cuttings from fruit trees -- called scions -- will be available to buy and graft onto root stocks. There also will be a short grafting workshop, and custom trees can be created on the spot.
Fusing a scion to a root stock produces a clone of the scion's donor tree, with the same tasty fruit -- like, for example, the funny-looking, scrumptious Allens Everlasting apple, which is not available at the neighborhood Safeway...

CROIX-DES-BOUQUETS, HAITI—By the time he was 4, Carlos Desir’s parents had died. His uncle and aunt, who adopted him, said only that they fell ill.
Then, late on the afternoon of Jan. 12, the earthquake that cleaved Port-au-Prince brought down his second home. His aunt, uncle and three cousins were crushed to death.
Next week marks the anniversary of the earthquake and, for 13-year-old Carlos, better times with families Nos. 3 and 4. The third is a group of orphaned and abandoned kids in an idyllic new children’s home on the city’s edge. The fourth — and most unlikely of all his families — is that of Air Canada’s chief operating officer, Duncan Dee, two plane rides away in Ottawa....

Why is there very little take up of Aquaponics in the commercial arena around the world? Is it lack of knowledge, too new and unknown or just too hard to make it work profitably?

Its not to do with making it work properly; it has been put to bed by now that this technology works and works well. My work at University and in New Zealand shows categorically that you can match, and even sometimes better, hydroponic plant growth rates and the harvest quality of the plants. Its more about whether it is financially viable or not. All commercial entities need to...

The Queensland Floods

Some people will be aware that this issue is rather late. Because we live in Caboolture which is in South East Queensland we have just been caught in what is this states biggest disaster for a century. Fortunately we came out of it OK unlike so many others. As it turned out we were hammered with rain a day earlier than the the Brisbane and Toowoomba storms. We were completely surrounded and of course isolated however the water only reached our verandah and started to subside within 3 hours. The problem for us was we already were cut off as you would have seen from the last photos. So yesterday everyone received messages from disaster H.Q. to get out but we were already stuck so we had to sit it out. Which really meant moving every bit of machinery to the highest possible location around the house.

I feel nothing but the deepest sympathy to all of the others who have lost loved ones and homes and all their personal belongings. One thing is certain, the fighting spirit and will to return and rebuild, will make these people determined to rise above what they are feeling through this time.

I wasn't here for the '74 floods but was a young, early teenager during the Maitland floods and helped with the cleanup there. Just like this time, the strength, solidarity and grim determination kicked in and everybody learned to pitch in for the common good.

Raised bed gardening has benefits for all
By KAROL KELLY - Special to The Telegraph
For gardeners, the winter months are a time when they can slow down and regroup for the upcoming growing season. For vegetable gardeners this means soil testing, investigating new vegetable varieties, shopping for seeds and planning the layout for a spring garden. One developing trend among local gardeners is the use of raised beds for vegetable gardening. This is a popular method for community gardens, urban gardeners, working families, senior citizens and even new gardeners.
